A Study on the removal time of nasogastric tube

Lee Jeong-Kyun
Abstract
Nasogastric-tube intubation is a important method for the G-I decompression after gastric surgery. But many discomforts were developed in the patients with Levin tube. So it is necessary to decide the time to remove the tube early as soon as possible for the prevention of complication and reduction of patient discomfort. Removal time of tube was studied in the postoperative patients with prospective randomized manner. 40 patients who underwent peptic ulcer or gastric cancer surgery were divided in two groups ; The tube was removad in the patients with well audible bowel sound before gas passage (20 patients) and after gas passage (20 patients).
(1) Patients were composed of 27 cases with peptic ulcer and 13 cases with gastric cancer. And there was no difference in the distribution of diseases between 2 study groups.
(2) The average tube removal time of the before gas passage group was shorter (55.0 hours) than that of the after gas passage group (80.2 hours).
(3) There was no significant difference in the feeding time and the average gas passage time between 2 groups.
(4) Postoperative complications were developed in 2 cases of before gas passage group and 4 cases of after gas passage group.
